About the Paracas Reserve
Protected since 1975, the Paracas National Reserve combines coastal desert and marine ecosystem in a single territory. It is home to sea lions, Humboldt penguins, flamingos and dozens of species of migratory birds, alongside desert formations that reach directly down to the sea.
The name "Paracas" comes from Quechua and refers to the strong sand winds characteristic of the area. The Paracas culture, which predates the Nazca, left behind a textile legacy here considered one of the finest in pre-Columbian America.
What to do in Paracas
- Ballestas Islands: a boat tour to see sea lions, Humboldt penguins and guano birds — nicknamed "the Peruvian Galápagos".
- Overland reserve circuit: viewpoints like La Catedral, beaches like Playa Roja (with reddish sand) and the famous Candelabra geoglyph, visible from the sea.
- Paracas boardwalk: a seafront walk with restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood.
Tips for your visit
The Ballestas Islands tour departs early in the morning (usually the best time, with calmer seas). Bring a windbreaker — the reserve is known for its sand gusts — and sunscreen, since there is little shade on the overland circuit.
